A gesture in peace – a contemporary dance performance inspired by Irom Sharmila (by Charu Shankar & Aanchal Kapur)
When Charu met Irom Sharmila for the first time, she was under arrest in ward no. 57 in AIIMS. She mentioned that she was a dancer, and Irom requested to see a performance by her. Moving the coffee table aside in her hospital room, Charu danced for her in that tiny room on that day. Her smile made Charu want to do something more, and that’s how this piece was born. It is a celebration of the girl Irom is, of her strength, of her spirit in the face of her enormous struggle, and the peace that she feels within.
