26 mins/ English, Hindi
Film maker: Harjant Gill
Producer: PSBT

13th April 2019
5 PM onwards

Venue: A-15, Tara Apartments,
Alaknanda, New Delhi 110019

About the film: Seen through the eyes of three Indian men, Mardistan looks at what it means to be a man in a rapidly globalizing society. The film explores how the power and privileges that accompany being a heterosexual Indian man are tied to broader issues such as gender inequality, patriarchy, son preference, misogyny and sexual violence. The film also illuminates the difficulties and challenges facing young Indian men today, including the lack of educational and economic opportunities, rampant corruption, ethnic and caste discrimination, disenfranchising them from the new infrastructure of opportunities promised by emerging Indian economy.

About the film maker: Harjant Gill is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Cultural Studies at Towson University, Maryland. He received his PhD from American University. His academic research examines the intersections of masculinity, modernity and migration in South Asia. He is also a documentary filmmaker and has made several films that have screened at film festivals worldwide and won numerous awards. His previous documentary with PSBT, Roots of Love, explored the changing significance of hair and turban among Sikhs and has been telecast on BBC World News, BBC America, and Doordarshan. He is currently also the Co-Director of Society for Visual Anthropology Film and Media Festival.

About the film club: This is an educational initiative of a not-for-profit organisation 'Kriti team'. The Kriti Film Club screens and shares documentary films on development, environment and socially relevant issues, in an effort to influence mindsets and behaviour towards an equitous, just and peaceful world.
