Kriti Film Club invites you for an evening of two films from ecoReels 2024 inMumbai
The Ecoreels Film Festival 2024, dedicated to showcasing films on the environment, climate change, and sustainable development, has been a notable success in Delhi. Organised by the Kriti Film Club, the festival aims to raise awareness and inspire action on critical environmental issues through the power of cinema. This month, the festival is bringing its impactful selection to Mumbai, with a special screening of two compelling films.
Mumbai (aka Bombay), a bustling metropolis, faces significant environmental challenges that threaten its ecosystem. Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation have led to the depletion of Mumbai's natural habitats. Mangroves, which act as crucial buffers against flooding and support diverse wildlife, are increasingly being destroyed for real estate development. Illegal encroachments on forest land and coastal areas have severely impacted the city’s ecological balance. The indigenous communities, such as the Adivasis and the Kolis, are facing displacement and loss of livelihood due to encroachment and environmental degradation. These communities, who have lived in harmony with nature for generations, are struggling to preserve their cultural heritage and traditional way of life amidst the pressures of modernisation and urban expansion. The dumping of industrial waste and sewage into the sea has led to deteriorating water quality, affecting marine flora and fauna. The degradation of coral reefs and mangroves further endangers marine biodiversity, impacting the livelihoods of fishing communities.
‘The Leopard's Tribe’ and ‘Bombay Has No More Crocodiles', from the festival’s selection, are two such films that address these issues. The screening in Mumbai promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking experience, continuing the festival's mission to educate and engage audiences on pressing environmental issues.

About the Film: This film is an anthology that explores the idiosyncratic development of urban Bombay, and its symptomatic relationship with the ecological. It looks at the different ways in which people have and continue to access the city; issues of housing, livelihood, and the ecosystem that powers the city and how it's being depleted by elements of capitalism.
