BOMBAY HAS NO MORE CROCODILES!

This film is an anthology that explores the idiosyncratic development of urban Bombay, and its symptomatic relationship with the ecological. It looks at the different ways in which people have and continue to access the city; issues of housing, livelihood, and the ecosystem that powers the city and how it's being depleted by elements of capitalism. Coastal Bombay, the fish, the fishing community and their homes get buried under concrete, from which emerge tall monoliths - shopping malls, golf clubs, luxury housing, etc. The protagonist, a pale, vigilant fisherman reminisces about a small house near the sea when he is brought back to a threatening present. About the attending Filmmakers: Sparsh is a writer, filmmaker and researcher, who has finished his Masters in Media and Cultural Studies from TISS, Mumbai. He is inTterested in the intersection of filmmaking and research around the themes of Media, Artificial Intelligence, Caste, Class, Culture & History. He's also interested in writing fiction novels and aims to write a sci-fi novel soon. Aparichit Collective started as a way for the four people above to answer questions and frustrations around them. They are planning to keep the collective beyond the Mumbai Chapter and continue to engage in multimedia works individually and together.

Yashasvi Juyal is a self-taught filmmaker and screenwriter hailing from Uttarakhand, India. His short film, The Last Rhododendron, garnered the Gender Sensitivity Award at the Dharamshala International Film Festival in 2021 and was selected for the international competition at the Mumbai International Film Festival in 2022. In 2023 he was the finalist of the Take Ten Programme by the Netflix fund for creative equity, where he created the feature film The Ink-Stained Hand and the Missing Thumb, which is currently awaiting its world premiere.

About the speaker: Avantika Tewari is a PhD Candidate at the Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She has served as a visiting fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, where she played a key role in the Digitality and Democracy Project. Previously, she was a Senior Research Associate with IT for Change and edited the essay collection "Feminist Perspectives on Social Media Governance." Her scholarly contributions include a chapter in the book "Psychoanalysis and ChatGPT." She routinely engages in media cultures and film analysis. Her social and cultural commentary has been carried by Heinrich Boll Stiftung, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Bot Populi, The Indian Express, Indian Cultural Forum, Feminism in India, Sublation Magazine, Critical Collective, Zizekian Analysis, among others.

About the Moderator: Shivani is the Co-Founder & Creative Director of Delhi based production house Katapult. She has directed a variety of projects ranging from prestigious brands like Google, Tata Housing, HCL, Uber to international organisations like Save the Children, Finland & WASH United. Over the past 15 years her work has spanned both fiction and non-fiction projects for television, digital marketing, corporate promotion, and international NGOs. She’s also keenly pursued her interest in working for and with children on shows like Galli Galli Sim Sim, and co-writing and co-directing a children’s short film called Saving Mr. Green. Over the last two years, Shivani has been part of the Kriti Film Club advisory group, playing a significant role in outreach and facilitation of some of our screenings and festivals.
