As part of the Global campaign of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, November 30th is marked each year, as 'South Asian Women's Day' - to remember the shared histories and feminist struggles of the region. This day was designated by Sangat under the leadership of senior woman activist, Kamla Bhasin and celebrates feminist friendships in and across South Asia. Curated by Aanchal Kapur, the Kriti Film Club initiated the Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival (BBFFF) in 2020 to mark this day as part of South Asian feminist solidarity.
Over the four online and two in-person editions of BBFFF till date, a total of 220 films from nine South Asian countries have been watched over these years. The festival films have been of a mixed genre, including documentary, fiction, animation, music videos, features; and a diverse mix of young and old, known and unknown, student and amateur filmmakers from the region. The festivals have been curated across different themes reflecting on important feminist perspectives, politics and concerns, gender, development and rights issues, across intersectionalities and challenging gender binaries.
The online viewership has been approximately 16000 people in India and across the world, and the in-person audience (over two editions) has been about 1500 people from Delhi-NCR and some people who have travelled from other locations. The festival has received over 40000 eyeballs over social media and the festival pages. The audience has been diverse in terms of age, gender, profession, etc. with several social science and multi-disciplinary students, academics, activists, practitioners, homemakers, retired government officials, professionals from different sectors of work, media persons, filmmakers, ordinary citizens and young people from local communities.
