BEYOND BORDERS FEMINIST FILM FESTIVAL 2022 / 1st - 5th December 2022 @India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

 

Initiated and held online in 2020 and 2021, the 3rd Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival goes hybrid in 2022 with a New Delhi (1-5 Dec, India Habitat Centre) and an online edition (10-25 Dec, Doculive). The festival is curated by Aanchal Kapur and Reena Mohan. It is organised by the Kriti Film Club with some support from Jagori.

In New Delhi, on the eve of the festival, we mark the South Asian Women’s Day (30th November), with the screening of a recent award winning documentary ‘From the Shadows #Missinggirls’. Subsequently, the festival begins a five day journey into feminist cinema from 1st to 5th December 2022, 7 pm onwards, each evening.

About the Film: A momentary act of revenge transforms the lives of two young Indian women forever. After surviving an acid attack, both Ritu and Faraha now have to navigate through a sea of odd currents in their daily lives. By intertwining the shadows and lights of hope and hopelessness, the film becomes a mirror where we see our own reflections.

About the Film: This film is a story on Cause and Effect. It shows the internal world of Anu, a 21 year old who suffers from Body Dysmorphia. As the story unfolds, one gets to see the degree of dysphoria she is facing, the root cause behind her current mental state as well as the catalytic factors that have contributed to her feeling this constant state of isolation.

About the Film: The artist begins an imaginative search into how she developed her schizophrenia and wonders if trauma is passed down genetically through generations. She talks to the jamun tree in the courtyard and the tree replies in the voice of an old woman. Images of the Partition of India are used and the artist wonders if her grandmother’s traumatic past (owing to the Partition) has a role to play in her own illness or suffering.

ATASI

About the Film: Atasi was declared mad by her family and admitted to a mental hospital. Once out of the mental hospital, she fell in love and ‘plotted’ her own recovery. She had a story to tell - not only a story of love in the time of madness but also that of a dysfunctional family in an odd little house in Kolkata.

About the Film: This personal account seeks to understand ‘loss’, ‘identity’ & is an attempt to reconstruct the long-lost home of the filmmakers’ birth, a place and of a time that exists in her and her family’s collective memories. Madhulika’s family left Kashmir in the early 1990s as a part of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus, due to the armed insurgency. She went to Kashmir for the first time with her family 24 years later.
