THE LAST RHODODENDRON

About the Film: In a small village in the mountains of Uttarakhand, as a daughter is summoned by an urban promise, her mother is haunted by the possibility of a ghost village. This film 'narrates the journey of a conflict where one generation is connected to the possibilities of the city, and the other is tethered to the survival of their land.

About the Filmmaker: Yashasvi Juyal is a self taught Independent Filmmaker & Screenwriter from Uttarakhand, India. His short documentary “A Wise Crab” was an official selection in JIO MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2015 and won the special jury award His second documentary “Confident in Being Confused” won the Best Documentary Award in the Indian Cine Film Festival (2016) & Special Jury Award in the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival (2016), Delhi. He later became the founder of his own film studio & organisation called “Silvercord Films” - mostly focussing on regional cinema of Uttarakhand and locally produced documentaries, experimental films, music videos, film workshops & art community gatherings.

CITY GIRLS

About the Film: City Girls, a short documentary that spends some time with Umra and Kulsum, who have moved to New Delhi from Banda, UP. The relationship between small town and city comes through the intimate lives of these young women, navigating a selfhood that the anonymity of a big city produces. The film attempts to deconstruct the image of ‘the city’ and what it means for girls and women brought up in an 'elsewhere’.

About the Filmmaker: An independent documentary filmmaker and television producer based in New Delhi, Priya’s body of work has focused on women and gender, her stories windows into myriad experiences of the body, the environment, the community, mapped from a gender and feminist perspective. Priya has been directing, producing and editing documentary films & television programmes for New Delhi Television, Fox Traveller, CNA, National Human Rights Commission of India, Films Division of India, Public Service Broadcasting Trust & Khabar Lahariya for over a decade now. Priya is currently an Executive Producer at Chambal Media.

GAY INDIA MATRIMONY

About the Film: ‘Gay India Matrimony’ revolves around three characters who are out to explore their marriage prospects. Sayan and Gourab are assigned male at birth, while Debalina, the director of the film, is assigned female at birth. All three are looking for a same-gender partner, and the very suggestion of wanting to marry a same-gender partner drives everyone around them into a complete frenzy.

About the Filmmaker: Debalina is one of the foremost documentary filmmakers working on gender and queer sexuality issues in India. Her films have been screened in community spaces, national and international film festivals and classrooms all over the world. Her film ‘Joy Run’ traveled to the 55th Berlin International Film Festival as part of the ‘Shoot Goals! Shoot Movies!’ short film competition of the Berlinale Talent Campus 2005. Her film ‘More than a Friend’ is one of the two Indian films to find a mention in ‘Queer Cinema in the World’.

In addition, Debalina has worked as a cinematographer for national and international documentary and short films. Recently she jointly received the best cinematographer award for 'Holy Rights' (2020), a documentary film about a Muslim women’s movement in India.

UNLOCKING DESIRES

About the Film: An animation film exploring desire, body, sexuality and choices through a feminist lens, from the perspective of adolescent girls and social workers who work with them. The narrative is stitched using conversations being done by adolescent girls and social workers. The conversations meander from sexuality to hidden desires of life.

About the Filmmaker: Chambal Media is a digital media social enterprise founded in 2015 by a diverse team of rural and urban media practitioners, with over 20 years of experience producing local language content especially with and for rural audiences. Chambal Media was founded with the mission to bring into the digital/internet revolution in India the perspectives and involvement of women on the margins.

MUMU SHELLEY
(49:36/ English & Hindi with English subtitles/ 2021/ Fiction)

About the Film: One night, two strange, weird and funny women end up "hanging out" due to absurd circumstances and get drunk on wine while judging each other's lives and slowly revealing the dark, comedic truths about their own.

About the Filmmaker: Batul studied Film Direction & Screenplay Writing at the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune. Batul has solid experience in working on powerful films around sensitive subjects and difficult locations, including her work as producer on BAFTA-nominated documentary REAL SLUM DOG CHILDREN OF MUMBAI and Netflix’s BAD BOY BILLIONAIRES and her work as director on documentary 150 SECONDS AGO in an earthquake-devastated Bhuj. Batul served on the National Award Jury 2015 and serves on juries at FTII, NID, Films Division, CFSI, IDPA, Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, Toto Fund for Arts and MAMI Half-Ticket.

ABOUT THE KRITI FILM CLUB: This is an educational initiative of a not-for-profit organisation
'Kriti team'. We screen and share documentary films on development, environment and socially relevant issues, in an effort to positively influence mindsets and behaviour towards creating an equitous, just and peaceful world. We also curate issue based film festivals and organise documentary film shows in neighbourhoods, communities, schools, colleges or institutions on request and otherwise. The Kriti Film Club has been screening documentaries regularly and independently (without any grants) in Delhi NCR since 2000 and in Mumbai since 2019, to promote 'thought-provoking cinema'.
