(96 mins/ Gojri, Hindi with Eng subtitles/ 2020)
Dir. Pushpendra Singh

on 15th January 2023, 7 pm onwards
at Gulmohar Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

About the film: A lyrical, feminist character study set in the Himalayans and based on an Indian folk tale, about a fiercely beautiful nomadic shepherdess named Laila who catches the eye of a lustful young herdsman. Laila Aur Saat Geet is part allegory, part ethnographic study, and part feminist fairy tale, using the narrative device of local folk songs - seven, to be exact - to describe the protagonist - Laila's inner and outer worlds.

About the filmmaker: Pushpendra Singh was born in Sainyaa, near Agra. After studying at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, he first worked as an actor and assistant director. In 2014, his directorial debut, Lajwanti, screened in the Berlinale Forum. His second feature film, Ashwatthama, premiered in the New Currents Competition at the Busan International Film Festival while his hybrid film Maru ro Moti was shown at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

About the Kriti Film Club: This is an educational initiative of a not-for-profit organisation 'Kriti team'. We screen and share documentary films on development, environment, and socially relevant issues, in an effort to positively influence mindsets and behaviour towards creating an equitous, just, and peaceful world. We also curate issue-based film festivals and organise documentary film shows in neighbourhoods, communities, schools, colleges, or institutions on request and otherwise. The Kriti Film Club has been screening documentaries regularly and independently (without any funding) in Delhi NCR since 2000; in Mumbai since 2019, and online since 2020, to promote 'thought-provoking cinema'.
