BORN TO SING
(45 mins/ Punjabi and English
with English subtitles/ 2001)
Dir. Shikha Jhingan

on 21st April 2024
(7 pm onwards)
Gulmohar Hall, India Habitat Centre
New Delhi

Followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.

About the Film: This film is a musical journey with four Mirasans, who sing life cycle ritual songs for their patrons in the Malwa region of Punjab. The film raises some important questions as it takes us along. What is the nature of the Mirasan's relationship with their land-owning patrons?  How do they deal with the dwindling patronage, as well as the pressures from the men of their own community? What happens when Punjabi pop music takes the entertainment industry by storm?

About the Director: Shikha Jhingan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Cinema Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She graduated from Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia University in 1986. She is also a graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Department of Film, and School of Fine Arts. Shikha is a founder member of Media-storm, an independent women’s filmmaking collective formed in Delhi in 1986.
As an independent filmmaker, some of her past works include ONCE THIS LAND WAS OURS , THE HIDDEN STORY, PRISONER OF GENDER, LIVING THROUGH PERFORMANCE, BORN TO SING and HEALTH MATTERS. She also co-directed THE POWER OF THE IMAGE, a twelve part documentary series on Bombay cinema. Her research work focuses on performance, practices and circulation of the female voice in Hindi film songs. She has published journal articles on this topic in Feminist Media Histories, Seminar and Bioscope: South Asian Screen Studies. (8/14)

ABOUT THE KRITI FILM CLUB: This is an educational initiative of a not-for-profit organisation 'Kriti team'. We screen and share documentary films on development, environment, and socially relevant issues, in an effort to positively influence mindsets and behaviour towards creating an equitous, just, and peaceful world. We also curate issue-based film festivals and organise documentary film shows in neighbourhoods, communities, schools, colleges, or institutions on request and otherwise. The Kriti Film Club has been organising documentary, fiction and feature film screenings and festivals regularly and independently (without any external funding) in Delhi NCR since 2000; in Mumbai since 2019, and online (Doculive.blogspot.com) since 2020, to promote 'thought-provoking cinema'. We often travel to other parts of India with specially curated packages of films. Reach out to us to collaborate and get up and close to #impactcinema
