About the Film: A story about love, ageing and a couple's shared plea for the right to die with dignity.
"This film began with the story of my mother. A fiercely independent woman, she was shattered with the news of not being able to drive. She began to talk about dying with dignity and like any daughter I glossed over it. A year later she passed away. Sometimes love is not enough. Months later, I read a news story about this couple’s appeal for the right to die with dignity. I met them to get closure for my mother’s death. I stayed back to film them over four years, in their micro universe - 53 years together, in a 10ftx10ft partitioned room, within a 100-year-old Mumbai chawl...Ira and Narayan’s inner and emotional spaces were revealed through their memories, their fears, their quarrels, their wry humorous perspectives, their silences." About the Filmmaker: Sumira Roy is an award-winning multidisciplinary storyteller based in Mumbai. Whether as a filmmaker, guest lecturer, poet, advertising creative director, she enjoys uncovering the tiny human truths that hum beneath us and that hold a mirror to our social constructs. Following a celebrated run at the International and domestic film festival circuit including Jury Award for Best Feature Documentary Tasveer film festival, USA and other nominations, the film comes home as winner Best Non-Fiction Feature at the 72nd National Film Awards. She is an alumna of a DOK Leipzig mentorship and the Literary Colloquium of Berlin and Robert Bosch Foundation grantee.
