About the film: Once entertainers and employees of the royal courts, they were believed to have mystical powers. Today they fight for dignity in life and death. TRANS KASHMIR is a film about the extreme hardships, resilience and beauty of Kashmir’s Hijra (transgender) community and their growing movement for basic human rights.
About the filmmakers: S.A. Hanan is a television producer, director and an educator. He has produced and directed around 300 hours of television programs that include documentaries, short fiction films, public service announcements, and talk show series for various television channels. Hanan is a recipient of the International Ford Fellowship (2007) – granted to social change leaders for their commitment to foster social justice, minority rights, and gender equality worldwide, especially in developing countries. Hanan has also extensively written on sustainable development, minority and gender issues, and other related subjects for various publications in Kashmir. He has taught film production as a guest faculty at many universities and institutes in India.
Surbhi Dewan is an independent film director, writer and producer. Her films connect personal portraits to larger socio-political landscapes. She has directed and produced a number of creative documentary films including her recent award-winning film DAUGHTER OF NEPAL. She has also co-produced A THIN WALL, a feature length documentary film about personal stories from the partition of India. Surbhi produces social and commercial audio-visual content with her New Delhi-based production company, Painted Tree Pictures.
Hanan and Dewan first met in 2007 while pursuing their MFA Film programme at the School of Film & Animation at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York.
ABOUT THE KRITI FILM CLUB: This is an educational initiative of a not-for-profit organisation, 'Kriti team'. We curate, screen and share documentary films on development, environment, and socially relevant issues, in an effort to positively influence mindsets and behaviour towards creating an equitous, just, and peaceful world. We also curate issue-based film festivals and organise documentary film shows in neighbourhoods, communities, schools, colleges, or institutions on request and otherwise. The Kriti Film Club has been screening documentaries regularly and independently (without any funding) in Delhi NCR since 2000 and in Mumbai since 2019, to promote 'thought-provoking cinema'. Since March 2020, we have also been screening online on Doculive, a virtual theatre space created specially for extending the reach of films to wider audiences.
